FiveStars

I’m not sure if “Cyanide” is meant for young adults specifically because of some of the language and dark subject matter, but I can definitely see it as a YA favorite. The story follows the intelligent and witty Fox Kane, an orphaned teenager living in an abusive foster home.

At the start, he is waiting for the next several days to pass when he will turn eighteen and be able to inherit his parents’ home and escape his violent foster father. He’s a loner gifted with a talent for art; his current creation an antihero ink beast named Cyanide. Hoping to escape stress for a while, he camps out in his parents’ home where he comes across magic sigils and spells, unintentionally bringing his character to life.

His one friend begins acting shady and through arduous ordeals trying to learn about his past, dark secrets and dangerous schemes come to light. Who’s the real beast in the story? The parents who abandoned him or the one that abused him? The friends who deceived him or his new companion Cyanide? or is it Fox himself?

It’s a very well-crafted and fast-paced story I’m sure will please lovers of ‘comic realms,’ fantasy, and real life struggle. It details the dark sides of both abusers and victims, a perfect antihero story.
