“With the sky out of reach, where will she run when the world turns to ash?”
Tessa is blessed with beauty, youth, and a dutiful partner who will do anything for her. Yes, she truly has it all. So why does guilt gnaw at her when she sets eyes on her lover?
She is a prisoner of a world enveloped by a phenomenon known only as the fog, a blight that brought about a runaway greenhouse effect, shrank the polar ice caps, and choked off the flow of life-sustaining sunlight. The fading embers of her world are about to be extinguished. People are desperate, and everyone is on borrowed time.
As a witness to Tessa’s final moments on this apocalyptic earth, ask yourself this: With the sky out of reach, where will she run when the world turns to ash?

I want to say first that all of Evelyn Chartres’ ebooks are offered absolutely free. If this changes in the future, I will update this note.
‘Come Hell or High Water’ is the prologue of the novel ‘High Water Mark.’ As a stand alone short story, it feels complete in a “slice of life” sort of way, but also leaves you craving more. The author has a habit of interconnecting all her stories. If you’ve read any of her work or my reviews of it, you’ll recognize one of the characters right off the bat.
Set in a apocalyptic future Earth where humans have taken to both the sky and the seas to escape the devastation, Evelyn and her wife Tessa are hid away in their apartment enjoying the last of the luxuries Evelyn’s fortune has allowed them. For the past many years throughout the fall of Earth, they’ve retreated into their own company, coping with the devastation by letting everything fall away from reality except for each other. Unfortunately, with the last of Evelyn’s money gone and the world showing no hope of recovering, the two must finally say their goodbyes.
It’s a heartbreaking scenario, deepened by knowing more about Evelyn’s past from the other books. I’ve already enjoyed Evelyn’s character, but this shows a lesser seen side of her that is emotionally wrecking. I thought I was going to cry a few times and it’s only fifty pages! If you like your heartstrings pulled, romance, and fantasy/scifi, it’s not a read you’ll regret.
