‘A Collection of Short Stories or Tales’ by Reuben Shupp –BOOK REVIEW

About ‘A Collection of Short Stories or Tales’ by Reuben Shupp:

Genre: Young Adult; Horror; Short Story; Anthology

This is a new edition of “Reuben Shupp’s First Short Story Collection.”

It had to be a joke. A bad one. What other reason could someone have to send Alex a picture of the clown with the letters N-E-X-T written across it. Just a joke. Even if it was written in blood. What’s the punchline? Find out in “A Collection of Short Stories or Tales.”

When Asa finds himself (accidentally) in another (alien) realm (Emerald Island), he realized the amulet that propelled here does not work in reverse. Are his survival skills and wits sufficient to keep him alive while he finds another way to travel home, or will he be forced to live out his life in this dangerous, alien world? Find out in a “Collection of Short Stories or Tales.”

I’m not sure what it is about the Halloween season that makes me want to read spooky anthologies, but Reuben Shupp has delivered the perfect atmosphere for the season in their horror anthologies. Today we have ‘A Collection of Short Stories or Tales.’

Surprise! A Gift of Revenge

This terrifying tidbit is centered around Black Friday, the one day a year I absolutely refuse to leave home. It brings out the worst in people and is completely hypocritical of what the holiday season is meant to be about. Reuben Shupp perfectly captures this storm of hatred, greed, and selfishness in what is, unfortunately, a horror story I could easily believe was real.

The Life Cycle: A Journey’s Tale

I’m intrigued by stories that are told from the point of view of non-typical narrators such as animals or inanimate objects. It took me a little while to figure out that a leaf (or branch) of a tree was telling this one! You’d expect such a protagonist to have a beautiful view of the world, what with being such an integral piece of nature and all, but you’d be surprised to see the horror angle the author has spun on this tale. Not perspectives I would have thought about, which make it all the more chilling.

A Boy’s Search for Midnight

I fully believe there’s no bond like that of a child and their pet. In this story, we set out on an eerie search for one boy’s missing dog. With the warnings of his drunken father in his ear and the untimely passing of his mother fresh in his thoughts, he cannot lose the one positive force he has left. But will his quest end happily or be gobbled up in the tragedy otherwise surrounding him?

The Traveler: A Portal Fantasy

I could easily see this one being turned into a full length novel. A boy is transported to an alternate realm via the power of a magical amulet gifted to him by his grandmother. Most kids- and adults!- dream of waking up in a fantasy world of elves and talking animals. However, our young hero’s mere presences is disrupting the balance of this new world and his evil doppleganger is set out to destroy him…or is the hero really the evil one?
