***Slight Spoilers***

Ravenscar is very well-structured historical fiction. The worlds of the warring kingdoms, their histories, their customs, and their peoples are all properly developed with the information given in a balance of showing and telling that maintains the reader’s attention. Action, adventure, struggle, and romance give the story a depth of life that is truly immersive.

The story follows Lord Kit as he bears news to the King of an evil plot against him. The Duchess Monfort has been targeted by a rival kingdom in hopes of conquering Gilard through forcing a child from her with the Carcullion King. The Duchess is a head-strong and independent woman who only accepts the protection of Lord Kit after much coercion.

During their journey to their King’s stronghold, the story quickly changes from a straight-forward plot to one of mystery and suspense. Not only is the Duchess the victim of her noble stature from Carcullion and her femininity from the ignorance of a medieval setting, she harbors a traumatic past that threatens her present at the hands of who would be called allies.

Lord Kit is also not free from dangerous relationships with those around him. Although a loyal and intelligent man, he too begins to question the strength of his allies. Nonetheless, his determined spirit and chivalrous intentions keep the hope of peace alive.

On the other side, it is also revealed that the two kingdoms histories are not quite as they seems. The evil Carcullion ruler has become a force of desperation after a past that had been unbeknownst to Gilard’s citizens. Every character in the story has a great depth to them that bombards the reader with a sense of uncertain morale while upholding some very basic and concrete truths.

The author isn’t afraid to describe dark situations in order to have the proper affect on their audience and has done an amazing job at creating a realistic, endearing, and immersive story. This book is a great start to a series!
