‘Mara’s Awakening’ by Leo Flynn —BOOK REVIEW

About ‘Mara’s Awakening’ by Leo Flynn::

Genre: Scifi; Space Opera; Antihero

Mara Keres. A trained warrior and formerly highly respected peacekeeper.

Note “formerly.”

Once, she had her life under control. Once, she had the trust of the galaxy.

Now she rots in the same prison she used to sentence people to. Solitary confinement for six years. Would’ve brought anyone else to their knees.

Not her.

Then an offer resurfaces, almost too good to be true. Ghosts of her past and demons come back to haunt her, will she ever make it out alive?

Sometimes, facing your worst memories is worth the risk.

Featuring a badass anti-hero, secrets, betrayals, twists and turns, this gripping story will keep you on the edge of your seat and leave you wanting more.

I have also reviewed these other titles by Leo Flynn:
Mara’s Choice (Mara’s Files book 2)

Let me start by saying I loved everything about the story: the twists in the plot line, the depths of the characters, the action, the drama…and all this is why regardless of it being a short story (which are quite often quickly paced), I have to comment on the fact that the story went by so fast.

The author is clearly very creative and knows how to make intriguing characters who feel real. Even with its short length, they were able to pull you in to each person’s mind and experience. From a grammatical standpoint, everything was perfect. The story has an interesting premise with a unique set of circumstances. Mara in particular was very well done.

While even though I thoroughly enjoyed the story (about to jump into book 2) and omission of too much detail is nothing abnormal for short stories, the reason why I dislike that pace in this story is because everything is so wonderful. I’m not trying to judge the author’s preferred length or writing style, but with what the author did put in, detailing those things just a little more could have very easily made this a full length novel without sacrificing the ‘page-turning’ pace.

With how much I enjoyed it, I know I’m not the only one who will be wishing there was more. I do feel there were a couple of points that definitely need a bit more detail just so it doesn’t seem to jump into the next scene without much doing, even with keeping it at short story length.

That said, I’m very much looking forward to the rest of the series, whatever length they may be! I really want to see where Mara goes from here and what else will be revealed by her intriguing past and this cool scifi universe.
