I am so in love with Benjamin Jones! His at first light-hearted and quirky adventure grows more sinister with each new installment. This realistic progression from the jovial adventure of a child into the darker side of both the protagonist and the world around him has always been such an important factor in coming-of-age and young adult series alike. They need to grow emotionally alongside the young reader and Asa Rodriguez has hit this on the nose.
Don’t get me wrong, there is still plenty of quirkiness and humor to keep the fantastical nature of the characters’ adventure alive! While Shadow is going through his own psychological growth as he learns to navigate the emotions that come with being his own person, his funny habit of speech and the shenanigans his childlike personality gets into are still abundant. Benjamin finds space for fun along the way too, such as discovering invisible paint; and the group’s time traveling companion’s habit of making references of things not yet come to pass (like Batman comics) never fails to get a laugh.
In the city of an ancient extraterrestrial race who are both the ultimate source of magic and the progenitors of Earth as we know it, Benjamin must join their warriors in battle against the Dark Lord Forvusmortem and his army of nasty ghouls. During the battle, Benjamin is instinctually overcome with his ever-growing powers. Their new heights frightening not just his enemies, but friends and allies as well. He is able to assure them he is under control…that is until The Book of 1st Witchcraft and its deep secrets tempt him just a little too much…
The Lord Forvusmortem maintains his attempts at winning Benjamin to his side through their strange bond and manipulation of his long-since deceased dark witch of a sister. Benjamin’s other aspects, such as his previous incarnation as the Wolf-Boy of indigenous legend, are likewise strained and tested through all of the evolutions and devolutions of Benjamin’s character and abilities.
Will he be able to solidify them all as one soul to the purpose of the light? Will his link to the Dark Lord or his need for power fuel his good intentions into an evil end? Or will he succumb to death at the hands of everything the universe has thrown at him? All questions answered in this action-packed emotional ride deeper into the unknown chaos of destiny.
