‘The Shaman’ is an ongoing horror story on Kindle Vella. Currently, there are fourteen chapters up. While I normally wait until a story is complete to review, it has been a few months since the last update and I feel enough has been posted for a review.
Although I can appreciate the genre for what it is, I am not a zombie fan. So you know when I say it’s good, it’s good! Chapter one drew me in with the brutality not only of the first kill, but of the brutal inner thoughts of the narrating character. It was heart-breaking the way her mind immediately warped as she attempted to overcome the unimaginable.
The story shifts between her point of view and three others, starting at the onset of a zombie apocalypse, then two years down the road. Each character was unique and all came together as the perfect collection of eyes to witness the horror through. My favorite character was Sebastian, the British SAS badass with his calculating mind and incredible array of defensive and offensive skills. I also very much appreciated Revis. While a despicable piece of shit, his origin story as the leader of the survivors was an intriguing take I’ve never seen in a story.
This book is an easy, fast paced read with humor, action, gore, strained romance, and emotional horror- so all the trademarks of a proper zombie apocalypse story! I only docked a star from the rating due the fact that without the rest of the story, I cannot judge if the representation of Native Americans is problematic or not. It’s thus far an awesome read and I do hope to see it finished in the future!
