Another great horror anthology from Reuben Shupp!
Harry
Spidey got his nickname from his love of spiders, so when the local fair boasts a “Spider House” haunted house experience, of course he wants to go! The problem is, only Spidey has witnessed its existence and it seems to have unleashed a dark curse upon his home. The author put his own twist on this simple premise, making it fun, creepy, and memorable.
One Summer Day
Centering around the frightful summer event of being a kid attacked by a dog, this story reminded me of my own childhood days. I grew up in a small town with a drug problem so learning to protect yourself from vicious dogs was commonly taught to us kids. That didn’t make the experience of actually having one assaulting you any less scary and the author adequately captured the feeling. Don’t get me wrong, I love dogs- there’s no bad breeds, just bad owners!
Flash
Did you know when cameras were first invented, people fully believed being photographed could capture your soul? When an innocent interest in old cameras leads two kids to an abandoned Polaroid with special powers, they become vigilantes. Despite knowing it must be kept out of wrong hands, they may be sorely mistaken about which hands are the wrong ones. Admittedly, this story plays on one of my own fears.
Andrea
I believe the author saved the best for last! This one is definitely my favorite. It follows the new kid in town who quickly becomes the target of a relentless bully. Andrea is no normal bully either. Her antics are easily psychopathic. Initially, the boy’s father ticked me off. Regardless of the horrendous things this bully was doing to his son, he insisted that the boy shrug it off and not retaliate. When the plot twist comes though, you understand where the father was coming from. The ending is most satisfying!
